Program Notes

It was a cold winter afternoon being spent with a good friend. Ka Yat Ngai, a good friend of several years was leaving the USA for good. My wife, Andrea, Ka Yat, and I were playing a game called “Who, what, where, when, and why?” This game asks each player to write down a word, phrase, or sentence for each of those questions on different pages. The result is a nonsensical, but often hilarious story. I collected our three stories and while we were watching a movie together, composed this piece. The words of each story were converted into numbers. These numbers constitute the pitch content of the piece. Each story was mapped to an instrument in the piece. The result, is a farewell for Ka Yat that is full of longing and sadness.
